Worksafe acting executive director for health and safety Stan Krpan has announced that Nurses have been identified as the most at risk of violence group in the workplace. In the last 4 years there have been 214 nurses and doctors who have been severely attacked. $4.5 million dollars in WorkCover payments have been spent because of the attacks. Worksafe has also commented that the figures are just the “tip of the iceberg” due to attacks being unreported and injuries sustained while fleeing aggressors have not been included. Mr. Krpan believes the aggressors behaviour are due to distress, fear, unreasonable expectations of care providers, mental illness, drugs, and alcohol. In February, a nurse was attacked with a knife, which is considered the breaking point. Demands include harsher penalties for assaults similar to assaults against caseworkers.
