IBM completed a study in the US, which looks at the price of wasted energy, lost productivity and operating costs. The study included 6,456 workers in 16 different cities. The results of waiting for the elevator were astounding. In a 12-month period offices lost the following cumulative hours in staff time:
New York: 16.6 years
Los Angele: 8.7 years
Chicago: 9 years
Houston: 6.8
The study also found that buildings consumed 72% of all the electricity, yet 50% of it was wasted. Rich Lechner, vice president for energy and environment at IBM commented, “Even as automobiles, transportation systems, electrical grids and other modern systems are achieving greater efficiency, many office buildings remain rooted in the past.”
