Approximately half the compositions of earth’s crust are silicon dioxide. Crystalline Silica is a basic component of soil, sand, granite and also found in stone, grout, bitumen, rock, gravel, glass, cement and clay and engineered stone.

This course is mandated for many working in the construction industry in most Australian States including WA.

Alertforce Course Outline

Quartz is the most common form of crystalline silica.

Cristobalite and Tridymite are two other forms of crystalline silica. All three forms may become respirable size particles when workers chip, cut, drill, or grind objects that contain crystalline silica. Silica is a generic term commonly used to refer to crystalline silica including crystalline quartz.

Silica has been a long standing health hazard, as far back as early civilisation, causing millions of cases of disease and deaths since stone masonry and mining began.

The impact of working with respirable crystalline silica is a topical issue that is receiving increasing attention due to the rising numbers of affected workers. Australia and other countries are witnessing a resurgence in diagnoses of silicosis disease in workers in mining, construction and now those who work with engineered stone.

Why Do You Need to Complete the 10830NAT Silica Exposure Prevention Course?

This course is now mandated by legislation in WA, (more info click here) along with the White Card and 11084NAT Course in Asbestos Awareness, to enter a construction site. See WorkSafe WA training requirements here for Asbestos Awareness.

Silica is widely encountered in extractive industries, in the manufacturing of many concrete based building materials. Typical industries include but not limited to:

Road,Currently,Under,Construction,At,Several,Levels,To,Increase,Traffic

According to Work Health and Safety Regulation 2011, PCBUs have an obligation to ensure that all workers who they believe may work with asbestos or asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) attend an approved course in asbestos awareness.

WorkSafe ACT currently requires workers to complete the 11084NAT Course in Asbestos Awareness (previously 10675NAT) and CPCWHS1001 Prepare to work safely in the construction industry. 10830NAT Course in Crystalline Silica Exposure Prevention is now mandatory for most construction industry participants working in the ACT. Inspectors are regularly visiting worksites and heavy fines may apply if you are found without this ticket. At best you will need to stop work immediately until you have the required training. Certain trades like sparkies and plumbers also will require 10852NAT Course in working with Asbestos containing materials.

Summary

Since 1 September 2024, WA introduced new regulations for crystalline silica substances (CSS) under the WHS (General) Regulations 2022. While accredited training is not yet mandated in the same way as the NT, employers in WA must ensure workers are trained and competent when undertaking high-risk crystalline silica tasks.

  • What: Regulation of silica in WA is governed by the Work Health and Safety Act 2020 (WA), its Regulations, and amendments specific to crystalline silica.
  • Who: WorkSafe WA (part of the Department of Energy, Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety) is the regulator overseeing compliance, enforcement, guidance, monitoring, and worker health.
  • How: Through legal mandates (e.g., exposure standards, risk assessments, bans), training expectations, silica risk control plans, health monitoring, and proactive inspections.

Course Overview

Gain the nationally recognised 10830NAT – Course in Crystalline Silica Exposure Prevention right here in Perth and across Western Australia. This half-day, face-to-face course is delivered via live webinar and equips you to identify and manage workplace hazards related to crystalline silica exposure—ensuring worker safety, compliance with WA WHS laws, and healthier lives for those in high-risk industries.

Why Silica Awareness Matters

Crystalline silica is present in engineered stone, concrete, bricks, tiles, mortar, and natural stone. Cutting, drilling, or grinding these materials releases respirable crystalline silica (RCS)—a fine dust that can cause:

  • Silicosis
  • Lung cancer
  • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
  • Kidney damage

This course provides the skills and knowledge to manage these risks effectively, aligned with WA’s silica regulations and WorkSafe WA guidance.

Who Should Attend?

This course is essential for:

  • Construction workers (tilers, masons, concreters)
  • Mining and quarrying workers
  • Engineered stone and stone product fabricators
  • Tradespeople (plumbers, electricians, painters, carpenters)
  • Workplace Safety Officers, PCBUs, and supervisors
  • DIY renovators or anyone handling silica-containing materials

What You’ll Learn

By completing the 10830NAT course, participants will be able to:

  • Identify silica-containing materials
  • Understand WA legislative obligations and health risks
  • Interpret Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and workplace exposure standards
  • Apply the hierarchy of controls and silica-safe work practices
  • Conduct risk assessments and develop silica-specific SWMS
  • Understand requirements for Silica Risk Control Plans under WA WHS laws
