Enquire NowConfined space work is undertaken every day across Sydney’s construction, civil infrastructure, utilities, wastewater, telecommunications, manufacturing and government facilities sectors. Whether maintaining underground services, inspecting sewerage infrastructure, entering plant rooms or performing maintenance within tanks and vessels, workers can be exposed to serious hazards including oxygen-deficient atmospheres, toxic contaminants, flammable gases and restricted access during emergencies. These risks make confined space competency an essential requirement across many NSW workplaces.
The nationally recognised RIIWHS202E Enter and Work in Confined Spaces course provides the practical skills and knowledge required to safely enter, work in and exit confined spaces in accordance with workplace procedures and industry requirements. Participants learn how to identify hazards, assess risks, work under confined space entry permit systems, undertake atmospheric gas testing and respond appropriately in emergency situations. Understanding whether a work area is classified as a confined space and recognising the hazards that commonly lead to confined space incidents are essential foundations for safe work.
Delivered by AlertForce, the course leads to a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment upon successful completion. SafeWork NSW administers the Work Health and Safety Act 2011 (NSW), with employers responsible for ensuring workers are trained and competent for the tasks they perform.
The RIIWHS202E Enter and Work in Confined Spaces course provides nationally recognised training in hazard identification, risk assessment, atmospheric monitoring and safe entry and exit procedures. Participants learn how to identify confined space hazards, apply risk controls, conduct atmospheric gas testing, communicate with standby personnel and implement emergency response procedures. The course also incorporates principles aligned with MSMPER200 Work in Accordance with an Issued Permit and MSMWHS201 Conduct Hazard Analysis, helping workers understand permit systems, hazard identification processes and risk management requirements commonly encountered across construction, infrastructure, utility and maintenance environments. Training reflects recognised industry practices, including the principles of AS/NZS 2865 Safe Working in a Confined Space.

Statement of Attainment
Issued upon successful completion
Anyone required to enter or work in confined spaces such as tanks, pits, shafts, vessels, silos, pipelines and underground infrastructure.
Workers involved in major infrastructure projects, utility networks, telecommunications, construction and maintenance activities where confined space entry may be required. Many employers also seek workers who hold both confined space and working at heights qualifications to support a broader range of high-risk work activities.
Workers performing inspections, cleaning, repairs and maintenance in enclosed or restricted environments.
Personnel responsible for overseeing confined space permits, contractor activities, risk controls and emergency arrangements.
Under the Work Health and Safety Act 2011 (NSW) and associated regulations, employers must ensure workers undertaking confined space work are appropriately trained and competent. Completing nationally recognised confined space training helps workers identify hazards, apply effective controls and follow the procedures required to safely manage high-risk environments. Across Sydney’s construction, civil infrastructure, utilities, wastewater and telecommunications sectors, employers recognise the importance of effective confined space training in reducing workplace risk.

Yes. Completing the nationally recognised RIIWHS202E Enter and Work in Confined Spaces course helps workers and employers demonstrate competency for confined space work under New South Wales’ WHS framework. Employers must ensure workers are appropriately trained and competent for the work they perform, and confined space training forms an important part of meeting those obligations.
Online VOC options may be accepted by some employers and worksites where workers already hold the relevant unit of competency and need to demonstrate ongoing competency. Acceptance varies between employers, contractors and sites, so workers should confirm specific requirements before enrolling. Find out more about refresher options and competency requirements in our guide to confined space certification and refresher pathways.
Course fees vary depending on delivery method and eligibility for NSW Training Fund subsidies. Contact us to confirm current pricing and funding eligibility.
