Confined space work is undertaken across many of Victoria’s major industries, including construction, utilities, water and wastewater infrastructure, manufacturing, transport, energy and local government operations. Whether maintaining treatment facilities, inspecting underground services, entering storage tanks or carrying out maintenance in industrial environments, workers may be exposed to oxygen-deficient atmospheres, toxic contaminants, flammable gases and other potentially life-threatening hazards. These risks make confined space competency an essential requirement across many Melbourne workplaces.
The nationally recognised RIIWHS202E Enter and Work in Confined Spaces course provides the practical skills and knowledge required to safely enter, work in and exit confined spaces in accordance with workplace procedures and industry requirements. Participants learn how to identify hazards, assess risks, work under confined space entry permit systems, undertake atmospheric gas testing and respond appropriately in emergency situations. Understanding whether a work area is classified as a confined space and recognising the hazards that commonly contribute to confined space incidents are essential foundations for safe work.
Delivered by AlertForce, the course leads to a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment upon successful completion. WorkSafe Victoria administers Victoria’s occupational health and safety framework, with employers responsible for ensuring workers are trained and competent for the tasks they perform.
The RIIWHS202E Enter and Work in Confined Spaces course provides nationally recognised training in hazard identification, risk assessment, atmospheric monitoring and safe entry and exit procedures. Participants learn how to identify confined space hazards, apply risk controls, conduct atmospheric gas testing, communicate with standby personnel and implement emergency response procedures. The course also incorporates principles aligned with MSMPER200 Work in Accordance with an Issued Permit and MSMWHS201 Conduct Hazard Analysis, helping workers understand permit systems, hazard identification processes and risk management requirements commonly encountered across construction, utilities, manufacturing and infrastructure environments. Training reflects recognised industry practices, including the principles of AS/NZS 2865 Safe Working in a Confined Space.

Statement of Attainment
Issued upon successful completion
Anyone required to enter or work in confined spaces such as tanks, pits, shafts, vessels, silos, pipelines and underground infrastructure.
Workers involved in major infrastructure projects, utility networks, transport projects, construction activities and maintenance works where confined space entry may be required. Many employers also seek workers who hold both confined space and working at heights qualifications to support a broader range of high-risk work activities.
Workers performing inspections, cleaning, repairs and maintenance in enclosed or restricted environments.
Personnel responsible for overseeing confined space permits, contractor activities, risk controls and emergency arrangements.
Under Victoria’s Occupational Health and Safety Act 2004 and Occupational Health and Safety Regulations, employers must ensure workers undertaking confined space work receive appropriate information, instruction, training and supervision. Completing nationally recognised confined space training helps workers identify hazards, apply effective controls and follow the procedures required to safely manage high-risk environments. Across Melbourne’s construction, utilities, manufacturing, transport and water infrastructure sectors, employers recognise the importance of effective confined space training in reducing workplace risk.

Yes. Completing the nationally recognised RIIWHS202E Enter and Work in Confined Spaces course helps workers and employers demonstrate competency for confined space work under Victoria’s OHS framework. Employers must ensure workers receive appropriate information, instruction, training and supervision for the work they perform, and confined space training forms an important part of meeting those obligations.
Yes. While Victoria operates under the Occupational Health and Safety Act 2004 (VIC) rather than the harmonised WHS framework used in most other states and territories, the RIIWHS202E unit of competency remains nationally recognised and widely accepted by Victorian employers. The course provides practical skills relevant to confined space work regardless of the legislative terminology used.
Yes. AlertForce can deliver onsite confined space training for workplace groups and, where appropriate, training may be conducted using workplace-specific equipment, procedures and simulated environments. This allows organisations to align training with their own confined space risks, permit systems and emergency response procedures.
Yes. RIIWHS202E Enter and Work in Confined Spaces is a nationally recognised unit of competency. Statements of Attainment issued by a registered training organisation are recognised throughout Australia. Individual employers, principal contractors and worksites may still require site-specific inductions, VOCs or additional competency verification.
Course durations vary depending on delivery format and participant experience. Upon successful completion of the training and assessment requirements, participants receive a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment for RIIWHS202E Enter and Work in Confined Spaces.
