Almost every type of job includes manual tasks. From typing on a keyboard to carrying heavy loads, these tasks may involve repetitive movement or sustained force that increase the risk of injury.

To ensure that workers understand proper handling techniques, PCBUs should provide suitable manual handling training.

What Is Manual Handling Training in Brisbane?

The training course covers the recommended methods for identifying and assessing the hazards of manual tasks. According to SafeWork Australia, over 43,000 workers lodged serious claims for body stress between 2014 and 2015.

Stacking shelves, entering information into a computer, and working on an assembly line involve manual tasks. These tasks may increase the risk of musculoskeletal disorders (MSD), which is an injury of the musculoskeletal system.

Through the training program, workers learn safe manual handling techniques. The goal is to reduce the risk of workplace injury through proper education.

The methods used to reduce MSD injuries are beneficial for workers in almost any industry. However, AlertForce offers four separate manual handling training courses for these industries:

  • Construction
  • Healthcare
  • Offices
  • Warehouse

The course content addresses specific best practices for the listed industry. For example, office workers may not need to know the steps for carrying heavy loads on a conveyor line. However, office workers can benefit from training to reduce injury due to repetitive movement, such as typing.

The course is not mandatory under the Work Health and Safety (WHS) Act, but it provides beneficial methods for reducing common injuries. Understanding how to perform manual tasks safely helps you avoid personal injury, such as:

  • Fractures
  • Cuts
  • Bruises
  • Back pain
  • Damage to tendons or muscles
  • Damage to nerves due to wear and tear

Lifting, pushing, pulling, putting down, carrying, or moving objects require proper techniques to reduce the risks of manual handling.

What Does Manual Handling Training Involve in Brisbane?

During training, attendees learn common manual handling risks and how to complete a risk assessment to identify hazards. Hazardous manual tasks may include any movement that involves the following:

  • Repetitive motions
  • Sustained or sudden force
  • Sustained or awkward posture
  • Exposure to constant vibrations

When workers are exposed to these types of tasks, they place unnecessary stress on the body. Common injuries include strains, sprains, and chronic pain. In severe situations, workers may develop joint degeneration or permanent nerve injuries.

The training session includes steps for preventing these injuries, no matter the industry. While the course content can vary, the topics covered typically include:

  • An overview of common injuries
  • Tips for assessing the risk of manual handling tasks
  • Steps for planning and performing these tasks
  • Recommended techniques for carrying, pulling, or lifting

These courses are not required. However, the techniques discussed follow the OHS Act model code of practice for manual handling.

A major part of the program is the process for conducting a risk assessment, which focuses on four specific factors:

  • The type of task
  • The employee
  • The type of load
  • The work environment

Before lifting, carrying, or pulling a heavy load, employees should assess the movement needed to complete the task, such as bending or holding an awkward posture.

Workers learn how the body moves and the potential hazards of improperly carrying or lifting objects. The course also includes the steps needed for developing a relocation plan.

Does a Manual Handling Certificate Expire?

After completing the program, attendees receive a certificate of completion. The certificate remains valid for two years.

Workers can download and print the certificate after successful completion of the program. In most cases, training centres require attendees to download the certificate from a website.

How Much Is Manual Handling Training in Brisbane?

A manual handling course in Brisbane averages about $60 to $80, depending on the jurisdiction and the type of training. Some providers, such as AlertForce, offer customised training options.

Before selecting a provider, if you require Nationally Recognised training, ensure that it is a registered training organisation (RTO). RTOs are approved providers that teach the latest standards and codes of practice.

How Long Does Manual Handling Training Take in Brisbane?

Training sessions take about two to four hours, depending on the provider and the number of employees attending the course. However, the information portions of the program and the practical training may only take about an hour. Of course online is a faster and more convenient option for many people.

At the end of the program, attendees complete an assessment to determine their competency. After successful completion of the program, attendees can download and print the certificate.

Manual handling training is not mandatory, but it does increase the health and safety of workers. The government recommends that PCBUs provide instruction to reduce workplace accidents. Enrol today to help create a safer workplace.
