Confined Space Training | Nationally Recognised Course (RIIWHS202E)

Working in confined spaces is not routine work. Whether you are dropping into a tank, entering a sewer, or inspecting a pit, the risks are real and they can change quickly.

That’s why confined space training matters. Not just to meet requirements, but to give you the confidence to recognise when something is off and know exactly what to do.

This confined space training course covers the nationally recognised unit RIIWHS202E Enter and Work in Confined Spaces. It is designed for workers, supervisors and businesses across Australia who need practical, compliant training that reflects what actually happens on site.

You will leave with more than a confined space ticket. You will understand how to approach the job safely, how to read the environment around you and when to stop work if something is not right.

If you have ever felt unsure about a reading, a permit or whether conditions are still safe to continue, this course is designed to remove that uncertainty.

What You'll Learn

This confined spaces course focuses on real scenarios, so the training connects directly to the work you are already doing or about to step into.

You will learn how to:

AlertForce | Confined Space Training
Identify confined space hazards, including atmospheric risks such as low oxygen, toxic gases and flammable vapours, as well as physical and biological hazards
AlertForce | Confined Space Training
Carry out atmosphere monitoring and gas testing using detection equipment, and understand what those readings mean in practice, not just on paper
AlertForce | Confined Space Training
Apply entry permit systems properly, so everyone on site knows who is entering, what controls are in place and when work must stop
AlertForce | Confined Space Training
Follow isolation procedures such as lock-out and tag-out to ensure equipment cannot be activated while someone is inside
AlertForce | Confined Space Training
Respond to changing conditions, including recognising early warning signs that a space is no longer safe
AlertForce | Confined Space Training
Carry out emergency response steps, including evacuation procedures and the role of the standby person
AlertForce | Confined Space Training
Understand the basics of confined space rescue and why preparation before entry is critical

For example, you might be working in a sewer or tank where conditions feel stable at first. The training walks you through what to do when gas levels shift, communication becomes unclear or a job takes longer than expected. These are the moments where people can feel pressure to push on, and where the right decision is often to stop, reassess and reset.

You will also build a clear understanding of responsibilities on site, including PCBU duties under the Work Health and Safety Act 2011 (Cth) and the Safe Work Australia Code of Practice: Confined Spaces. This gives you the context behind the procedures, so they feel practical rather than just administrative.

Who is this course for?

This training is designed for people who work in confined spaces, as well as those responsible for managing that work safely. Confined space risks exist across a wide range of industries, often in places that are easy to overlook until work begins.

It is suitable for:

AlertForce | Confined Space Training
Workers in utilities, water and wastewater, construction, mining, manufacturing and agriculture
AlertForce | Confined Space Training
Anyone entering tanks, pits, silos, tunnels, pipelines or sewers as part of their role
AlertForce | Confined Space Training
Supervisors and safety officers who authorise confined space entry and need to be confident controls are in place
AlertForce | Confined Space Training
Standby persons responsible for monitoring workers inside and coordinating emergency response
AlertForce | Confined Space Training
PCBUs and site managers with legal responsibility for confined space safety under WHS regulations
AlertForce | Confined Space Training
Workers renewing an existing confined space ticket

If you are stepping into confined space work for the first time, this course gives you a clear, structured way to approach it. If you have been doing this work for years, it reinforces best practice and updates your knowledge in line with current standards.

It is also relevant for teams who want to standardise how confined space work is managed across sites, so everyone is working from the same process and expectations.

Qualification

Nationally recognised statement of attainment

AlertForce | Confined Space Training

Delivery mode

Face-to-face training with a mandatory practical component, or blended delivery with online theory and in-person assessment

AlertForce | Confined Space Training

Duration

Typically completed in one day

AlertForce | Confined Space Training

Assessment

  • written knowledge test
  • practical demonstration of gas testing
  • completion of an entry permit
  • response to an emergency scenario
AlertForce | Confined Space Training

Prerequisites

No formal prerequisites. Participants must be physically capable of completing practical tasks.

During the practical component, you will work through realistic scenarios using the same types of equipment and processes you would use on site. This might include testing the atmosphere of a simulated confined space, completing a permit under time pressure, or responding to a change in conditions mid-task.

These exercises are designed to build confidence. So when you are on site and something changes, you are not working it out for the first time.

Depending on your role, this course may sit alongside other high-risk training, such as working at heights, particularly where multiple hazards exist on the same job.

AlertForce delivers confined space training across Australia, with regular public courses and options for group or on-site delivery.

For teams working across metro and regional areas, this national delivery means you do not need to rely on different providers or standards. Everyone can be trained consistently, regardless of location.

Blended delivery options are also available, allowing theory components to be completed online before attending a practical session. This can make it easier to fit training around shift work and project schedules.

A confined space ticket is the statement of attainment issued after completing RIIWHS202E. While it does not have a formal expiry date, many workplaces require refresher training every one to two years to keep skills current and aligned with site procedures.

Under the Work Health and Safety Act 2011 (Cth) and WHS Regulations, PCBUs must ensure workers are trained and competent to carry out confined space work safely. This includes providing appropriate training, supervision and systems of work.

Some theory components can be completed online as part of a blended course. However, a face-to-face practical assessment is required to demonstrate competency in areas such as gas testing, permit systems and emergency response.

This course focuses on safely entering and working in confined spaces. Confined space rescue training is more specialised and covers advanced rescue techniques, equipment use and coordinated emergency response.

Costs vary depending on location, delivery mode and whether training is completed individually or as part of a group booking. For current pricing, check course listings or contact AlertForce directly.
