This course is mandatory for individuals applying for an Owner Builder licence in the ACT. It must be completed before submitting your application and within five years of applying for your permit.
To work on a construction site as an owner builder, you may also need additional safety training such as a White Card (CPCWHS1001), along with Asbestos Awareness and Silica Awareness training to ensure you meet workplace safety requirements.

Yes. Completing an approved Owner Builder Course is mandatory before applying for an ACT Owner Builder Licence. The training ensures you understand your legal responsibilities, safety obligations, and the requirements involved in managing a residential building project.
The Owner Builder Course is delivered fully online, allowing you to complete the training at your own pace. Most learners complete the course in a few hours depending on their experience and familiarity with construction and building regulations.
Once you successfully complete the course and assessment, you will receive a certificate of completion. This certificate can then be used as part of your Owner Builder Licence application in the ACT.
No prior qualifications or construction experience are required. The course is designed for property owners who want to manage their own residential building or renovation project and need to understand their legal and safety responsibilities.
The Owner Builder Course certificate does not expire, however it must be completed within five years before applying for an ACT Owner Builder Permit.
Once you receive your Owner Builder Permit, it applies only to the specific building project and property listed in the permit. The permit remains valid for the duration of that construction project but cannot be reused for future builds.
If you want to act as an owner builder on another project in the future, you will need to apply for a new permit.
