Yes, in the ACT this course is mandatory for all construction workers, alongside the White Card. For other Australian states, it is the recommended Code of Practice training for anyone who may work with or disturb asbestos-containing materials.
The Asbestos Awareness course typically takes 3–4 hours to complete. It is delivered in a structured classroom or online environment that covers the identification of asbestos-containing materials, legal requirements, and safe work practices. In the ACT, this training is mandatory for all workers involved in construction and similar trades. In other Australian states, it is recommended for anyone who may work near, disturb, or manage asbestos-containing materials.
Certificates are usually issued on the same day once you successfully complete the course and required assessments. If you complete the course online, your certificate will be emailed to you immediately after passing. Some providers may take up to 24 hours to finalise documentation.
No prior qualifications are required. The Asbestos Awareness course is designed for workers of all experience levels, including apprentices, supervisors, tradespeople, and site workers. The course teaches fundamental, legally required knowledge, so beginners are welcome.
If you do not pass the assessment on your first attempt, you will be given the opportunity to review the learning material and resit the assessment. Most providers offer at least one complimentary resit, as understanding the content is essential for workplace safety and compliance.
Yes — group or corporate bookings are available. Many training providers can deliver onsite sessions for larger teams, tailor scheduling, or offer bulk enrolment options. Team training ensures everyone meets ACT legal requirements and follows consistent, safe work practices.

The ACT Building and Construction Industry Training Fund Authority (TFA) provides subsidies for approved training undertaken by eligible employers and workers in the construction sector. You may be eligible if:

  • You work for an ACT-based construction company, and
  • Your employer pays the mandatory Training Fund Levy on your projects.

If eligible, your course fee may be partially reimbursed. You or your employer will need to apply for the subsidy after completing the course.

The Asbestos Awareness certificate in most jurisdictions does not have a formal expiry date, but employers often require refresher training every 2–5 years to ensure knowledge remains current. Some regulatory bodies or worksites may specify their own renewal timeframes. In the ACT, while refresher training is not legally mandated, it is strongly recommended — especially for workers regularly exposed to potential asbestos-containing materials.
