A safety management system is designed to ensure the continued safety of the employees of a company. According to OSHAcademy, an online training center that offers courses in workplace safety, an audit of the safety management system should be done yearly to ensure that the safety management system is working correctly. Any issues discovered in the audit should be remedied to improve the program.
Chain of Responsibility
A safety management system should have a clear chain of responsibility. A person or committee should be designated as responsible for developing and reviewing the safety program. Each employee should know their responsibilities within the program and should be carrying them out. Those in charge of enforcing the program should be consistently carrying out their responsibility.
Chain of Responsibility Training
Every employee should know what hazards are related to their position. They should be trained in the safety of their respective jobs and re-trained whenever a new safety concern is introduced into their job. The employer should keep records of the training completed by each employee. The records should include the name of the employee, the date and who gave the training.
