Falls from height continue to be one of the leading causes of fatalities in the NSW construction industry, making effective fall prevention training critical for workers across Sydney’s construction, infrastructure, telecommunications, utilities, roofing, scaffolding, high-rise maintenance and building services sectors.
The nationally recognised RIIWHS204E Work Safely at Heights course provides the skills and knowledge required to identify hazards, assess risks and safely perform work where there is a risk of falling. Delivered by AlertForce, this practical face-to-face training covers the hierarchy of fall prevention controls, fall protection systems, fall arrest systems, equipment inspection, and the correct use of harnesses, lanyards, inertia reels and anchorage points in accordance with SafeWork NSW requirements and the WHS Act 2011 (NSW).
Participants learn how to identify fall hazards, implement suitable control measures and fulfil workplace responsibilities under Australian WHS legislation. The course also covers PCBU obligations to eliminate or minimise the risk of falls and the practical application of Safe Work Australia’s Code of Practice: Managing the Risk of Falls at Workplaces. Those wanting to better understand the legal framework can also explore our guide to working at heights regulations.
Importantly, workers seeking a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment or working at heights ticket must complete face-to-face practical training and assessment. While some providers advertise online working at heights training, online-only delivery does not result in the nationally recognised RIIWHS204E qualification. Existing ticket holders may be able to complete a VOC (Verification of Competency) refresher accepted by an employer or site operator, subject to workplace requirements. Workers who regularly perform work in elevated and enclosed environments often choose to complete the combined pathway of RIIWHS204E Work Safely at Heights and RIIWHS202E Enter and Work in Confined Spaces. Upon successful completion, participants receive a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment for RIIWHS204E Work Safely at Heights.
This qualification is commonly referred to as a working at heights ticket or working at heights card and is recognised throughout Australia. The Statement of Attainment can be used on construction, infrastructure, telecommunications and maintenance projects throughout NSW and interstate. While the qualification does not have a legislated expiry date, many employers, principal contractors and site operators require workers to complete refresher training or a VOC (Verification of Competency) at regular intervals, often every two years, to demonstrate ongoing competency. Workers should always confirm individual site requirements with their employer.

Is Working at Heights training mandatory in NSW?
Where work involves a risk of falling, employers must ensure workers are trained and competent in safe working at heights procedures under WHS regulations.
How long does the course take?
Working at Heights training is typically completed in one day for face-to-face delivery. Refresher training may take less time depending on experience and competency requirements.
When will I receive my certificate?
Certificates are usually issued on the same day once you successfully complete the course and required assessments. If you complete the course online, your certificate will be emailed to you immediately after passing. Some providers may take up to 24 hours to finalise documentation.
What if I fail the assessment?
If you do not pass the assessment on your first attempt, you will be given the opportunity to review the learning material and resit the assessment. Most providers offer at least one complimentary resit, as understanding the content is essential for workplace safety and compliance.

Depending on the project, employer or principal contractor, additional site-specific inductions, competency assessments or specialised training may also be required. Always check project requirements before commencing work.
The SafeWork NSW Code of Practice for managing fall risks says workers must be trained and competent - does completing the RIIWHS204E satisfy this requirement?

Existing ticket holders may be able to complete a VOC or refresher where accepted by the employer or site operator. However, workers completing the qualification for the first time must undertake face-to-face practical training and assessment to receive the nationally recognised RIIWHS204E Statement of Attainment.
