Under the WHS Act 2012 (SA), PCBUs must eliminate or minimise risks arising from hazardous manual tasks so far as is reasonably practicable. SafeWork SA expects employers to identify manual handling hazards, assess associated risks and implement suitable control measures to reduce the likelihood of workplace injuries.
Hazardous manual tasks may involve lifting, lowering, carrying, pushing, pulling, holding or restraining loads where workers are exposed to repetitive movement, sustained force, awkward postures, vibration or high force. Under the WHS Act 2012 (SA), PCBUs must identify hazardous manual task risks and implement reasonably practicable measures to eliminate or minimise those risks. This includes providing appropriate training, instruction, supervision and control measures to reduce the likelihood of musculoskeletal injuries.
Manual handling training helps workers understand hazardous manual task risks, recognise common injury factors and apply safer work practices. While training is only one part of risk management, it supports broader WHS compliance obligations and workplace safety outcomes.
Manual handling injuries can occur in almost any workplace, but they are particularly common in healthcare, aged care, construction, manufacturing, warehousing, logistics and government operations where workers regularly lift, carry, move or handle equipment, products or materials.
Course duration varies by industry stream, with most courses taking between 45 and 60 minutes to complete, including assessment activities. Upon successful completion, participants receive a Certificate of Completion.
There is no prescribed refresher period under South Australian legislation. However, many organisations recommend refresher training every two years, or sooner if workplace risks change, incidents occur, new equipment is introduced or workers move into different roles involving hazardous manual tasks.
