Western Australia’s mining, resources, oil and gas sectors rely heavily on workers entering confined spaces during shutdowns, maintenance activities, inspections and operational tasks. From processing plants and refineries to storage tanks, pipelines, crushers and industrial infrastructure, these environments can expose workers to oxygen-deficient atmospheres, toxic contaminants, flammable gases and other potentially fatal hazards. Confined space competency is therefore a core requirement across many Perth workplaces and FIFO operations throughout the state.
The nationally recognised RIIWHS202E Enter and Work in Confined Spaces course provides the practical skills and knowledge required to safely enter, work in and exit confined spaces in accordance with workplace procedures and industry requirements. Participants learn how to identify hazards, assess risks, work under confined space entry permit systems, undertake atmospheric gas testing and respond appropriately in emergency situations. Understanding whether a work area is classified as a confined space and recognising the hazards that commonly lead to confined space incidents are essential foundations for safe work.
Delivered by AlertForce, the course leads to a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment upon successful completion. WorkSafe WA administers the Work Health and Safety Act 2020 (WA), with employers responsible for ensuring workers are trained and competent for the tasks they perform.
The RIIWHS202E Enter and Work in Confined Spaces course provides nationally recognised training in hazard identification, risk assessment, atmospheric monitoring and safe entry and exit procedures. Participants learn how to identify confined space hazards, apply risk controls, conduct atmospheric gas testing, communicate with standby personnel and implement emergency response procedures. The course also incorporates principles aligned with MSMPER200 Work in Accordance with an Issued Permit and MSMWHS201 Conduct Hazard Analysis, helping workers understand permit systems, hazard identification processes and risk management requirements commonly encountered across mining, resources and industrial workplaces. Training reflects recognised industry practices, including the principles of AS/NZS 2865 Safe Working in a Confined Space.

Statement of Attainment
Issued upon successful completion
Anyone required to enter or work in confined spaces such as tanks, vessels, pits, silos, pipelines and processing infrastructure.
Workers involved in shutdowns, maintenance activities, plant operations, processing facilities, refineries and resource projects where confined space entry forms part of routine work. Many employers also seek workers who hold both confined space and working at heights qualifications to support a broader range of high-risk tasks.
Workers performing inspections, cleaning, repairs and maintenance in enclosed or restricted environments
Personnel responsible for overseeing confined space permits, contractor activities, risk controls and emergency arrangements.
Under the Work Health and Safety Act 2020 (WA) and associated regulations, employers must ensure workers undertaking confined space work are appropriately trained and competent. Completing nationally recognised confined space training helps workers identify hazards, apply effective controls and follow the procedures required to safely manage high-risk environments. This is particularly important across mining, oil and gas, construction and industrial operations where confined space work often forms part of routine maintenance and shutdown activities. The importance of competency-based training is reflected in the strong focus placed on preventing confined space incidents through effective worker training.

A Unique Student Identifier (USI) is required to issue your Statement of Attainment. Assistance can be provided if needed.
Upon successful completion of the course, participants receive a nationally recognised RIIWHS202E Statement of Attainment.
Workers who already hold the unit may also undertake a VOC (Verification of Competency) refresher where accepted by their employer or site requirements. VOC requirements vary between employers, principal contractors, resource companies and mine sites.

Yes. Completing the nationally recognised RIIWHS202E Enter and Work in Confined Spaces course helps workers and employers demonstrate competency for confined space work under Western Australia’s WHS framework. Employers must ensure workers are appropriately trained and competent for the work they perform, and confined space training forms an important part of meeting those obligations.
Yes. The course covers atmospheric gas testing, hazard identification and risk controls associated with oxygen-deficient atmospheres, toxic contaminants and flammable atmospheres. These competencies are directly relevant to mining, oil and gas, processing, energy and industrial environments throughout Western Australia.
Yes. AlertForce can deliver onsite confined space training for workplace groups across Perth and regional Western Australia. Training can be aligned with workplace-specific procedures, hazards and operational requirements, making it suitable for mining, oil and gas, processing and industrial operations.
The RIIWHS202E Statement of Attainment does not have a formal expiry date under WHS legislation. However, many employers, contractors and principal contractors require workers to periodically demonstrate ongoing competency through refresher training or VOC assessments. Find out more about refresher options and competency requirements in our guide to confined space certification and refresher pathways.
Yes. Many employers across mining, construction, shutdown, maintenance and industrial environments require workers to hold both confined space and working at heights qualifications. Combined training options can help workers meet common site requirements while developing competency across multiple high-risk work activities.
