Confined space work is undertaken across many of the Northern Territory’s major industries, including mining, oil and gas, defence, utilities, water infrastructure, construction and remote infrastructure projects. Whether maintaining treatment facilities, inspecting underground services, entering storage tanks or carrying out maintenance in industrial environments, workers may be exposed to oxygen-deficient atmospheres, toxic contaminants, flammable gases and other potentially life-threatening hazards. These risks make confined space competency an essential requirement across many Darwin workplaces.
The nationally recognised RIIWHS202E Enter and Work in Confined Spaces course provides the practical skills and knowledge required to safely enter, work in and exit confined spaces in accordance with workplace procedures and industry requirements. Participants learn how to identify hazards, assess risks, work under confined space entry permit systems, undertake atmospheric gas testing and respond appropriately in emergency situations. Understanding whether a work area is classified as a confined space and recognising the hazards that commonly contribute to confined space incidents are essential foundations for safe work.
Delivered by AlertForce, the course leads to a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment upon successful completion. NT WorkSafe administers the Northern Territory’s work health and safety framework, with employers responsible for ensuring workers are trained and competent for the tasks they perform.
Course Overview
What You'll Learn
The RIIWHS202E Enter and Work in Confined Spaces course provides nationally recognised training in hazard identification, risk assessment, atmospheric monitoring and safe entry and exit procedures. “Did a CPR refresher. Reminded me of the things I'd missed or forgotten about. Got it done and got out. Highly recommend. Of the 10 or so of these I've done, this is the first that actually felt like a useful refresher and not just trying to stay awake to check the boxes.”
“The AlertForce course for Enter and Work in Confined Spaces was very comprehensive and informative. John is a very experienced worker and instructor, which enhanced the training experience for all of the class, he answered all our questions from both the health and safety, and legal perspective, and would also use his own real-world experiences to demonstrate the answers. Thank you AlertForce Team and John, I'll recommend your courses to anybody who's looking for training.”

“Had my white card training today and it was an excellent experience all round. Being the only female in the group I was nervous at first, but everyone was so friendly (I don't think I touched a door once today lol) and welcoming. The instructor (shout out to Craig) was really interesting and friendly and made the course really engaging, time flew by! I 100% recommend these guys and will be going back soon to complete my working at heights certification.”
“Helped with learning new skills and techniques and learning stuff to go out to the force into the traffic control area”

“Did my Whitecard, Asbestos, Silica, and Working at Heights. All classes were informative, and succinct. The instructors were great, especially John, who did my working safely at heights.”
“Excellent course, I'm saying this because unless like most courses that are just plain boring. This course was run By Matt who I think is a great educator, he explains information in a way that's not just educational but also relevant to today's work practices, his insight and depth of knowledge shows his years on both subjects like asbestos and silica and how dangerous both can be, I'm now armed with the knowledge of how to treat these hazards and also how to prevent a problem that can be eliminated, I definitely recommend this course for anybody who wants to learn about asbestos and silica.”
“Just completed my forklift course with Craig, highly recommend”
“I'm really satisfied with the way the class was lead simple and easy to remember for the questions on the theory test. I'm really grateful that I'm given another chance to do train and do the practical test again which I didn't pass on the first time. So that I'm prepared to use the forklift without making mistakes when I do get my licence as well as work using the forklift.”

Can confined space workers in Darwin complete the RIIWHS202E face-to-face in Darwin, or do they need to travel to another city?
Workers can complete the RIIWHS202E Enter and Work in Confined Spaces course in Darwin through AlertForce’s scheduled training programs. Face-to-face delivery includes the practical components required to develop competency in confined space entry, hazard identification, atmospheric monitoring and emergency response procedures.
Does completing the RIIWHS202E help NT workers demonstrate competency for confined space entry under NT WorkSafe's WHS framework?
Yes. Completing the nationally recognised RIIWHS202E course helps workers and employers demonstrate competency for confined space work under the Northern Territory’s WHS framework. Employers remain responsible for ensuring workers are appropriately trained, supervised and competent for the tasks they perform, and may also require site-specific inductions or additional competency verification.
Working in Darwin's tropical climate. Does the RIIWHS202E address heat, humidity and gas behaviour as confined space hazards?
Yes. The course covers hazard identification and risk assessment principles that apply to a range of confined space environments, including factors that may affect worker safety such as atmospheric conditions, ventilation, heat stress and hazardous atmospheres. Participants learn how atmospheric gas testing, monitoring and control measures contribute to safer confined space entry.
My Darwin site has both confined space and working at heights requirements. Can workers complete both as a combined course?
Yes. Many employers across construction, defence, utilities, resources and infrastructure projects require workers to hold both confined space and working at heights competencies. AlertForce offers training pathways that combine confined space and working at heights units, helping workers obtain both qualifications efficiently while meeting workplace requirements.
