In most jurisdictions, manual handling is the leading cause of injury and can often account for around
50% of all injury claims. Manual handling effects all workers whether they be in manufacturing,
heavy industry or office environments and therefore should be addressed by all employers.Manual handling can be defined as any interaction that a person has with another object. It could
involve lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling or any other movement.
Manual handling can cause a range of injuries from simple strains and sprains to permanently
disabling joint or back injuries. As anyone who either has or knows someone with a back injury,
chronic pain can result which can effect a person for the rest of their lives.
Injuries can be the result of a single incident or as a result of wear and tear over a number of years.
